![]() ![]() Aside from brilliant art work, the contestants proved to put on an entertaining show. The climax of which was the tattoo contest. Which made for a comfortable environment to enjoy the activities. It was fascinating to meet the man behind all those incredible photographs.Īs the day went on I noticed a lot of familiar faces, the people from Ace Inkers and Avalon were all there. He wanted some photos of Tattoolands' rising star, Dean. Times are changing fast.ĭean and I were later introduced to John Buchter, of Skin Art and Outlaw Biker fame. His reply was, "It has almost reached the point where not having a tattoo is abnormal." I laughed and mentioned how I was afraid to show my mom my tattoo until she began boasting about her own. I asked Shawn what he thought of all the people showing up for a tattoo convention. His unique style would draw crowds anywhere. (Whose work also adorns the arm of the infamous SIN art editor Richard Martinez.) With an evil grin, he was free handing an amazing piece on some guy's leg. Weaseling my way through the throng I discovered none other than Shawn Warcot, of Empire Tattoo. I was thinking about what could be demanding all that attention with so many interesting things going on. I came across a crowd of people all huddled around a tiny booth. He has helped make popular that tribal style in America. Dean explained that Leo developed his art by studying with a tribe in Borneo. Dean introduced me to one of his favorites Leo Zulueta, of Black Wave Studios. Guy was a featured attraction and booked solid the entire day. When I showed up in the morning, Rob was already indulging himself by getting a tattoo from one of his favorites, Guy Atchison. Luckily Dean and Rob of Tattooland were taking a day off from tattooing and proved to be quite the reliable tour guides through this spectacular world of living art. The real stars of the day were the tattooists. SIN Photographer Jeffree Benet finds his tattoo twin The Hollywood star set showed its support such as lan Astbury, of The Cult, helping judge a tattoo contest, or David Lee Roth curiously browsing around, to mention but a few. The crowd was a mixed bag from the Hell's Angels to punkers, it attracted people of all walks of life. It turned out to be a virtual who's who of the tattoo industry. It was an interesting event to say the very least. SIN was cordially invited to partake in this mayhem by the kind folks at Tattooland. This month was also the 1st Annual Ink Slingers Ball at the Hollywood Palladium, hosted by Tattoo Mania. ![]() La Luz de Jesus, Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles featuring the flash art of The Pizz, Baba, Pat Kelly and Fip Buchanan from Avalon, and Living Color Tattoo Museum, Garnet, San Diego, with their collection of tattoo memorabilia.
